August/September 2009

AGM
The Association’s AGM will be held on 1 October 2009 at Kings Chambers, Manchester. Drinks will be served from 5pm and the AGM will start at 6pm prompt.

It is now nearly a year since I took over as Chairman of the Association at last year’s AGM, and we elected a new Committee comprising Andrew Grantham (Secretary), David Casement Q.C. (Treasurer), David Berkley Q.C., Paul Chaisty Q.C., Nigel Bird, Neil Cadwallader, Stephen Connolly, Cheryl Dainty, James Fryer-Spedding, Mark Harper and Lisa Walmisley.

During the year we have co-opted onto the Committee Claire Bunbury of St James’s Chambers.  Claire will be formally standing for election to the Committee at the AGM.

Under the Association’s Constitution, election to membership of the Committee is for a period of 2 years and so there are no elected members of the Committee up for re-election this year.  However, there is no limit on the size of the Committee, and if there is any other member who wishes to contribute to the work of the Association through the Committee, then they should complete the nomination form attached to the notice of the meeting sent to members, and return it our Secretary, Andrew Grantham, at Kings’ Chambers, by no later than 24 September 2009.

Confidentiality and Human Rights

Our next CPD Seminar will be held on Wednesday 4 November 2009 (please note the change of date) and is on Confidentiality and Human Rights.

The Speaker is Edward Bartley Jones QC (Exchange Chambers). Edward appeared in the House of Lords in leading case of Cream Holdings v. Banerjee [2005] 1 A.C.253, concerned with the effect of section 12 of the Human Rights Act 1998 on an application for an injunction to restrain the misuse of confidential information. This is an interesting and controversial topic in the light of recent attempts by the Courts to introduce a “judge made” law of privacy.

The Seminar will be held at Exchange Chambers, 7 Ralli Courts, Manchester M3 5FT, commencing at 6.00pm (with registration from 5.30pm).

This seminar will carry 1 ½ hours CPD.

New Practitioners Programme

On Thursday 29 October 2009 we will be hosting the next event in our New Practitioners Programme when District Judge Khan and James Fryer-Spedding will be talking on Applications to the District Judge - Security for Costs, Summary Judgment, Specific Disclosure, Skeleton Arguments and Use of Authorities. This will provide a practical and detailed guide to the conduct of applications before District Judge, and provide a helpful insight from a local District Judge.

This will be held at the Radisson Edwardian Manchester, commencing 6.00pm (with registration from 5.30pm).

Please reserve a place by emailing our Administrator, Sara Brett (admin@nccba.org.uk) promptly as demand is sure to be high.

This seminar will carry 1 ½ hours CPD

Website

As you should have observed, the website is now more or less fully up and running.  As well as providing details of Association events, the website now contains a list of members, and details of individual members’ specialisations, there is also a hypertext link to members’ pages on their own Chambers’ websites.

There are still a number of members who have not completed the questionnaire about specialisations. Without this it is impossible to include your details on the web site.
