February 2009
NCCBA Re-Launch
The NCCBA was formed in 1996
to promote the practice of commercial work for the Bar on the Northern Circuit.
Following a period of inactivity the new committee plans to revive it as a
proactive bar association, with a full programme of events and CPD seminars.
There are seven CPD events running between February and December this year
together with a New Practitioners’ Programme (for those barristers of under
three years’ call) of four events in March, June, October and December. Details
are outlined in the programme below.
The NCCBA is accredited for training by the Bar Council and the Law Society, and
CPD points will be available for attendance at these events. There will also be
opportunities to meet and exchange views with Commercial solicitors
from Manchester and Liverpool.
We also have social events in the pipeline, and intend to hold a dinner later in
the year.
Mr Justice Andrew Smith Visit
The 2009
CPD Programme opens on Tuesday 10 February 2009 at 6pm with drinks at the
Manchester Civil Justice Centre and a talk on The Commercial Bar outside
London from Mr Justice Andrew Smith of the Commercial Court.
To book a place please indicate on the membership application form or e-mail the
administrator on admin@nccba.org.uk.
Website
We are currently developing this website to promote the NCCBA listing members’
individual specialisations and detailing upcoming events. We intend to follow
this with a blog later in the year which we hope will encourage member feedback
and online debate.
Building Relationships
We want to develop stronger links with solicitors, accountants, insolvency
practitioners, bankers, insurers, and the local Chambers of Commerce, with a
view to promoting the local Commercial Bar and the Manchester and Liverpool
Mercantile Courts. The NCCBA has representatives on the Mercantile Court Users’
Committee, who intend to ensure that the views of local practitioners are put
forward in respect of the running of the Liverpool and Manchester Mercantile
Courts.
Liverpool events
The majority of our members are based in Manchester. However, we recognise that
there are a significant number of commercial practitioners in Liverpool, and to
reflect this we intend to hold some events in Liverpool.
Subscriptions
We have significantly reduced subscriptions for the current year from previous years. For further details please visit our membership page.
